A practical approach to the work

A deck is more than its exposed surface. Door thresholds, edges, outlets and penetrations form part of the water-management detail. Altitude's membrane work includes decks and junctions, with the repair approach selected after the condition and construction are understood.

01

Existing membrane defects

Describe visible splits, lifted areas, worn detailing or previous patches. Identify whether the membrane is exposed or covered. Do not remove tiles or other finishes to collect evidence for an initial enquiry; existing photographs and records are useful first.

02

Edges and thresholds

Water appearing near a door or below a balcony does not prove the source is directly above the stain. Include the surrounding wall and door in your photographs. Investigation may need to consider more than one junction before a repair is scoped.

03

Local repair or renewal

A small visible defect does not establish the full extent of the work. The membrane condition, substrate, drainage and compatibility of materials all influence whether a targeted repair or broader renewal makes sense. Ask for the reasons behind the proposed scope.

Useful observations for your enquiry

What you seeWhat to record
Water collecting on the surfaceWhere it collects, when it clears and which outlets are nearby.
Damp below or beside the deckThe indoor location and the weather conditions when it appears.
A damaged edge or membrane jointA safely taken photograph showing the surrounding detail.
Repeated patchesWhat was done, when, and whether the symptom returned.

Agree the waterproofing scope

  • Identify the deck or balcony area and its current finish.
  • Ask which junctions and outlets are included in the assessment.
  • Confirm whether covered or concealed areas need further investigation.
  • Discuss substrate repairs and reinstatement of finishes.
  • Ask who will clarify any design, approval or consent requirements for the proposed work.

Questions before you book

Can a coating be applied over existing tiles?

That cannot be decided from the visible finish alone. The existing system, condition and compatibility need assessment. Do not assume that another surface layer will address the water-entry path.

Is this the same as fixing a roof leak?

Decks and balconies have their own thresholds, edges and use requirements. If the source of the water is unknown, our leak investigation service can help define the problem before a repair is selected.

Can you confirm a warranty before seeing the deck?

The proposed system and scope need to be established first. Ask for any applicable product and workmanship terms in the proposal; no blanket warranty is promised on this page.
